You probably picked queen’s because…
The community here is incredibly strong, with people always ready to help. I was drawn to Queen’s for engineering because of this support, and I’ve never regretted my decision for a minute.
Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do, and I’m grateful for the moments where I made lifelong friends. That’s why this guide exists: it was created with the help of dozens of upper-year students who contributed their advice to make your journey easier.
A big thank you to all the upper years who made this guide possible. If you’re a first-year and this guide has helped you, we’ve accomplished our goal. Soon, it’ll be your turn to help new students navigate this amazing community!

My name is Ruby, and I’m a second-year Mechanical Engineering student from KINGSTON, ONTARIO!!! I like movies, going to concerts, visual arts, entrepreneurship, and snow skiing. Like almost everyone at Queen’s, my first year was filled with fun moments, failures, successes, homesickness, lifelong friendships, and new adventures. One of the best choices I made was reaching out to upper-year students—they helped me make friends, get involved, succeed in my classes, and discover new opportunities. That’s why I’ve put these resources together for you. I want you to know there are always people looking out for you, cheering you on, and wanting you to succeed.
If you’re feeling busy, overwhelmed, or nervous, I promise it gets better. If you’re feeling excited and hopeful, remember this is just the beginning of what’s to come. Realistically, you’re probably experiencing a mix of emotions, and that’s totally normal. There’s always someone here to help you through it all.
I’ve even added some photos of my first year below (which I might regret, but oh well!). Good luck with your first year—you’ve got this!
Me being super awkward for my first day in res (WEST IS BEST)!
Me working on coding in first year after getting pit flu for the 20th time and wanting to give up (but I DIDN’T!!!). Horrible, horrible photo.
Our res floor about to play laser tag against 7-year-olds (we lost).
